Are You a Trigger Shy Affiliate?
Posted by admin
A few weeks ago I was thinking about buying a piece of software. I was doing my due diligence (searching Google for reviews, reading forums, etc) and came across a page from an affiliate…now it’s rare that I sign up to any marketer’s list; especially if I don’t know who that person is. But this guy made a compelling offer and he hit my hot buttons….so I opted in.
Up to that point, he had done a stellar job. He provided me with some excellent content upfront and had a strong promise of more after the opt in. But after the opt in is where things went south quickly. What this guy failed to do is MAKE ME A FRIGGIN OFFER! I was ready to buy the software. I was just looking for a bit more info and the right offer. Instead I got a bunch of generic information on tracking and testing.
This guy spent way too much time trying to build a relationship. Don’t get me wrong, this is an important part of marketing…but what he did in the process was let me cool off as a lead. I was a hot lead, ready to buy and instead of asking for the sale…he forgot about that and tried to give me a ton of information.
What he should have done as soon as I opted in was send me to a page with more information about the product I opted in to learn about and then asked me to buy it through him….right then and there. He is obviously very knowledgable about the software…he could have easily put together a value packed report that would help me cut my learning curve with the software and offered it as a bonus for me purchasing at that point. I would have taken him up on that offer in a heartbeat. Instead he spent two weeks sending me emails with generic info about tracking and testing. It took him 2 full weeks to make me an offer and even then his offer is extremely weak. He mentions the software as a solution to your tracking needs; almost as an aside.
Bottom line: your prospects are never going to be as “ready to buy” as they are when they first opt in. So make then an offer as soon as possible. You can always follow up and build the relationship after the opt in. But DO NOT wait to make them an offer and do not be shy about it. And be sure to add some kind of bonus to your offer if you’re promoting something as an affiliate. Give your prospects a reason to purchase through you and you will see much higher conversion rates.
