Are You a Trigger Shy Affiliate?

A few weeks ago I was thinking about buying a piece of software. I was doing my due diligence (searching Google for reviews, reading forums, etc) and came across a page from an affiliate…now it’s rare that I sign up to any marketer’s list; especially if I don’t know who that person is. But this guy made a compelling offer and he hit my hot buttons….so I opted in.
Up to that point, he had done a stellar job. He provided me with some excellent content upfront and had a strong promise of more after the opt in. But after the opt in is where things went south quickly. What this guy failed to do is MAKE ME A FRIGGIN OFFER! I was ready to buy the software. I was just looking for a bit more info and the right offer. Instead I got a bunch of generic information on tracking and testing.
This guy spent way too much time trying to build a relationship. Don’t get me wrong, this is an important part of marketing…but what he did in the process was let me cool off as a lead. I was a hot lead, ready to buy and instead of asking for the sale…he forgot about that and tried to give me a ton of information.
What he should have done as soon as I opted in was send me to a page with more information about the product I opted in to learn about and then asked me to buy it through him….right then and there. He is obviously very knowledgable about the software…he could have easily put together a value packed report that would help me cut my learning curve with the software and offered it as a bonus for me purchasing at that point. I would have taken him up on that offer in a heartbeat. Instead he spent two weeks sending me emails with generic info about tracking and testing. It took him 2 full weeks to make me an offer and even then his offer is extremely weak. He mentions the software as a solution to your tracking needs; almost as an aside.
Bottom line: your prospects are never going to be as “ready to buy” as they are when they first opt in. So make then an offer as soon as possible. You can always follow up and build the relationship after the opt in. But DO NOT wait to make them an offer and do not be shy about it. And be sure to add some kind of bonus to your offer if you’re promoting something as an affiliate. Give your prospects a reason to purchase through you and you will see much higher conversion rates.

Reconditioning Yourself for Success – Part 1

I’m a huge proponent of positive thinking. Tony Robbins says that 80% of success in anything is psychology and I tend to agree with that statement. I’ve found it to be true in my own life.
I was reading a book the other day called "The Magic of Thinking Big" and came across something that I thought was very profound. It got me to wondering how many people ever think along these lines. Here it is in it’s entirety…some of it is paraphrased from the book but most of it is word for word:
Suppose you tell several of your "average" friends with the greatest sincerity "Someday I’m going to be vice president of this company." What will happen? Your friends will probably think you are joking. And if they do believe you mean it, chances are they will say, "You poor guy, you sure have a lot to learn." Behind your back they may even laugh at you and/or question whether you have all of your marbles.
Now, assume you repeat the same statement with equal sincerity to the president of your company. How will he react? One thing is certain: he will not laugh. He will look at you intently and ask himself "Does this guy really mean this?"
But he will not "laugh"
Because big men do not laugh at big ideas.
Or suppose for a second that you tell some average people that you plan to own a very expensive home. They may laugh at you because they think it’s impossible. But tell your plan to a person already living in an expensive home, and he won’t be surprised. He knows it is possible, because he’s already done it.
People who tell you it cannot be done almost always are unsuccessful people, are strictly average or mediocre at best in terms of accomplishments. The opinions of these people can be poison.
Develop a defense against people who want to convince you that you can’t do it. Accept negative advice only as a challenge to prove that you can do it.
Be extra, extra cautious about this: don’t let negative-thinking people destroy your plan to think yourself to success. Negators are everywhere, and they seem to delight in sabotaging the positive progress of others.

My 3 Pronged Promotion Jumpstart
Posted by admin
Every time I decide to promote a new product as an affiliate or need to promote one of my own sites or products, I have 3 steps that I take first. The great thing about this little promotion strategy is that it’s simple and it works quite well.
First off, I always do my keyword research. I’m not going to get into the ins and outs of keyword research here but my research is usually pretty simple. I just use Google’s keyword tool to search out relevant keywords to the product I want to promote. I try to find something that isn’t too competitive but that has a decent amount of searches each month (at least 1000-5000). Here’s a real rough way to do this:
1. Go to Google’s Keyword Tool – just type "google keyword tool" into Google.
2. Search for your main keyword phrase. Look for a phrase that is 3-5 words long with a decent amount of advertiser competition and at least 1000 monthly searches. Here’s an example:

In this example, I like the term "xbox 360 red light fix" for a couple reasons. First, it has a good amount of advertiser competition which tells me that people are paying to get traffic for this phrase. Second, it is a 4 word phrase that probably won’t be too difficut to rank organically for. Lastly, it has 4400 avg searches per month. Not great but still a decent amount of traffic.
3. Make sure you have the SEO Plugin for Firefox installed on your Firefox browser. If you don’t have it, you can get it here: SEO Plugin
4. Make sure the SEO Plug-In is activated. You should see it in the bottom right corner of your browser. If it is in color, it is on…if it is grey, then you need to click it to activate it.
5. Go to Google.com and type in your keyword. In this case, it’s "xbox 360 red light fix"

This SERP tells me a few things. First off I look at the upper right hand corner and see that there are only 422,000 competing pages for this search term. Anything under 500K is usually relatively easy to rank on page 1 for…so this is good.
Secondly, I can use the tools provided by the SEO Plugin to get info on all of the ranking sites. I can click the question marks (?) under the listing to get info like: pagerank, # of yahoo links, # of diggs, etc. For the most part, I look at pagerank, # of Yahoo links, age, and how many diggs or bookmarks the page has.
Now scroll down the results page and look at the title of each page. In the above picture, the #1 ranked site has the title "XBox 360 3 Red Light Fix – Red Light Fix". This is the title tag of this page. Your title tag is very important to ranking in the organic results. I’m not too worried about the #1 guy, I just want to make sure that not every result on page 1 has the keyword I’m targeting in their title tag.
The next thing I notice is what kinds of sites are ranking here. In this case I see that there are 2 YouTube videos that rank highly. I do this because I want to know what kind of sites rank well so that I can use similar sites to attack this keyword phrase. In this example, I would not use YouTube to go after this keyword phrase as there are already 2 YouTube videos ranking. I would however use other video sites such as Google video, Revver, Viddler, etc as I know Google ranks videos highly for this phrase.
Before I start any promotion, I need to build a page that will be my money page. I recommend building the page on a WordPress blog with a very basic theme. Be sure to get the "All In One SEO Pack" plugin for your blog…and when you build the page that will be your money page (a presell page or name capture page) be sure to put your keyword phrase in the title of the page. For this example, I would use a title like:
XBox 360 Red Light Fix – How to Fix The XBox 360 Red Light
(hint: use your keyword at the beginning of your title and repeat a variation of the phrase later in the title. keep title tag at or under 65 characters)
OK, I’m getting a bit off track here. I want to tell you my first 3 promotion strategies. I always use these in this order. :
1. EzineArticles.com – I know, article marketing is old school. Nothing new here. But it works. Go here and submit an article using your keyword in the title. Be sure to use the "resource box" of the article to link back to your money page with your keyword phrase. in this case the keyword phrase would be "xbox 360 red light fix" You can put 2 links back to your page with this anchor text in your resource box.
2. WordPress.com blog – Setup a free blog on the wordpress.com site. I do this because wordpress.com is seen as an authority site by Google and their links are counted highly. Wrie up a quick blurb about your topic using your keywords. Make the info good and useful. No more than 3-4 paragraphs…and link back to your money page. I usually only use 1 link at the beginning to avoiod looking like a spam blog. Setting up this blog is super easy…just a few clicks and you’re up and running.
3. Squidoo.com – Setup a lens on squdioo.com using your keyword phrase. For many keyword phrases, you will be able to get the exact phase as your URL for the lens. Again, write some decent content and link back to your money site using your keyword phrase. If you’ve never used Squidoo before, don’t worry about it. It is very straight forward and easy to figure out. Just sign up and follow the steps they give you.
Bonus Tactic: OK, I said 3 but what the hell, I’ll give you one more that’s extremely powerful. Make a video! I usually use a screen capture software such as Camtasia to make a quick video talking about the problem and solution. If you don’t have Camtasia, use Animoto.com to make a video using just pictures. It is fun and easy…they allow you to make 30 second videos for free and download them to your computer.
Send your video out to as many video hosting sites as possible. I use Traffic Geyser to do this but it can be a bit costly at $97/month. If you don’t have Traffic Geyser, then use a free service like TubeMogul.com. It won’t get you on as many sites, but it’s still quite effective.
That’s It! You’ve effectively kicked off your promotion. For many keywords, I will see page 1 rankings on Google just by doing the steps I outlined above.
Now get out there and kick off a new promotion!

SEO Toolbar Kicks Serious A$$!

If you analyze any of your competitor’s websites for SEO purposes, then you absolutely must download the SEO Toolbar for Firefox. You have to download it while in the Firefox browser, so make sure you’re using firefox before you go there.
The toolbar is simply amazing. It puts tons of competitive research right at your fingertips and really cuts down on the time it takes to analyze the competitiveness of your keyword phrases.
Go here and watch the video, then get the toolbar for free (at least it was still free when I posted this)
Til next time,

List of High PR (PageRank) Directories
Posted by admin
I was browsing one of my favorite forums and came across this list of high PR directories that you can submit your website to. Directory submissions can be a great no cost or low cost way to develop some very powerful backlinks to your site – that will boost your search engine rankings and your site’s pagerank.
The PageRank of each directory is listed right before the URL. So take some time and submit your sites to a few of these (especially the ones with the highest PRs)…or outsource it!

The Lack of a Business Model
Posted by admin
I have noticed one thing when watching people try to make money online. Most have absolutely NO business plan. They simply jump from opportunity to opportunity; never giving anything a real chance to reach maturity.
Is this you? If so, you shouldn’t be embarrassed. There is an absolute ton of info on how to make money online out there….also a ton of different ways to do it. The key is to choose one: adsense, blogging, affiliate marketing, ecommerce, eBay. Choose one and only one and do not stop until you are making money with that model.
I will elaborate more on this in later posts.
